Hey! I’m Lyn.
I was 8 years old and my art teacher and I sat on a log with our sketchbooks in our laps staring at the dense thicket of pine trees. She told me to draw what I saw. At 8, I was accustomed to coloring within well-defined lines and drawing what I saw represented in children’s books. I happened to look down at my teacher’s sketchbook and a whole new world opened up before me. Her drawing had movement and wildness and poetry within every stroke. In that moment I was struck by wonder and the possibility of what I could create.
“It is far better to capture the glorious spirit of the sea than to paint all of its tiny ripples.”
Born in South Carolina, I grew up on a farm in North Florida, on land that my grandmother said we could sell as oceanfront property if we got a good rain. The palmettos, live oaks and pine, swamp, creeks and pond were my playground. The scenes and settings of the coastal south and the Caribbean inform much of my work. The geography, people and culture are embedded soul-deep within me. I studied at the University of Florida and graduated with a degree in Broadcast Journalism. Although I’ve painted on and off since I was a little girl, I dedicated most of my life to the performance arts. Painting took a back seat to singing. But while raising my two girls, I was always creating something for them — painting murals on their bathroom walls or creating mosaics with sea shells. Our house was always swirling with paint and glitter.
My home is in Charlottesville, Virginia with my husband. I am a mother of two beautiful girls with families of their own and I have three amazing grandchildren. I am an abstract expressionist artist who creates lyrical paintings for those who love the natural world.
